Our local library system is being hit AGAIN with cuts and I plan on going to the county hearings and speaking for the library. I would love to see a concise, well-written, 2-minute “speech” anyone could give in support of his/her local library with just a few “local” tweaks. It must be hard-hitting, to the point, and extremely well articulated. I haven’t found anything like this yet, and am hoping there is an advocate out there who is a great writer who would put out at least a first draft for the rest of us. Anybody willing to take a shot?

Emily,
In Colorado, we have been working on a speech for library advocates (all kinds of info about this movement is available at http://bhagColorado.blogspotcom).
Our standard talk is longer than two minutes, but it is intended for customization. The script is available at http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgbxx4pq_3xn8cdwct
As for a two minute talk, I think a poignant story, or BHAG’s four talking points could work as the foundation of a short talk:
1. Libraries change lives.
2. Libraries mean business.
3. Libraries build community.
4. Libraries are a smart investment.
You’ll notice that the script revolves around stories, and not a litany of stats. Brain research shows that stories spur our attention and sink into our memory far faster than data and stats. Stats have their place- but it’s important to warm the soul (and brain) first with a touching story.
Also, if you write a two minute advocacy talk, please share it here.
